TAMIYA 1:24 LAMBORGHINI COUNTACH LP500 S (CLEAR COAT RED BODY) LIMITED EDITION

T

amiya's 1:24
Lamborghini Countach
kit was originally
launched in 1978 (as
the LP400) and back then,
as did most Tamiya 1:24 car
kits, it came with the items
needed for motorisation;
wiring, switch, gears and,
of course, a little Mabuchi
130, one of the most
ubiquitous electric motors
of all time. The twin AA
batteries fitted up into a
compartment through the
model's underside, roughly
where the real car's engine

would sit; once switched on
it was usually a matter of
seconds before the car shot
across the dining room floor
and smashed itself to pieces
against the skirting boards.
In this revisited edition
however, the motor and its
associated parts have gone
and we are left with just
the car kit which, even after
forty-plus years still looks
as fresh as a daisy. That
amazing Countach body is
perfectly proportioned and
this time the raw red plastic
has been given a high quality

gloss lacquer finish at the
factory. The engine cover,
rear wing, headlight and
air-intake covers are also
clear-coated. As odd as it may
at first seem, this approach
works really rather well, the
orange-peel free gloss doing
a good job of disguising the
lack of a painted surface. The
interior parts are moulded
in roughly the right colours
too, although they'll look way
better under a coat of paint:
Tamiya's new Lacquer Paints
applied by airbrush would
be ideal for this. If you fancy

adding a retro classic to your
collection but are put off by
the thought of the paint job,
this car might be just right
for you! The kit comes with
driver figure in helmet and
racing suit. ●
