KHAOS in the backcountry


The adjustment takes some weight off
the ski and transfers it to the track mak-
ing the skis easier to loft through terrain
and allowing the sled to be more respon-
sive to rider input.

“The changes in skid geometry give the
machine a light, nimble feel that is per-
fect for those who like to rally in the
backcountry and get crazy with it,” says
World Champion hillclimber Keith
Curtis.
Now let’s talk power. The 850 Patriot
engine is boasted by Polaris to have the
best power-to-weight ratio, and while it
has always been a beast there are several
improvements this year that make the
machine more durable, more efficient
and provide better performance. AmSnow
test riders, Kevin and Lonnie Thompson
joke that the 850 is “sneaky fast,” where
it doesn’t feel as fast in the seat as it is,
taking you by surprise when you pass
and outperform other sleds. Surprisingly,
all the engine changes integrate seam-
lessly into the well-loved AXYS chassis.
The raised AXYS platform gives the
rider balance and control and seems to
pop up on top of the snow without any
effort. Polaris also covered durability
with the KHAOS. The forged A-arms and
spindles, and aluminum over structure
and rear bumper seem to be made for the

After putting this sled through the trenches, we’re sure
it’s the most playful sled Polaris offers, largely due to its
KHAOS rear suspension. With a longer front track shock, a relaxed
limiter strap and a slightly steeper rail profile, this suspension pro-
vides great front-end lift and light handling.
