Hurricane set

180mph winds
HURRICANE Dorian is set to unleash devastation
in the Bahamas with winds up to 180mph.
Hotels on the holiday islands were boarded up
last night, homes evacuated and some airports shut,
after the storm was upgraded to the highest rating
- a catastrophic five. Parts of nearby Florida could
be evacuated too.
High waves snapped trees and destroyed docks
as tourists struggled to stay on their feet.
The National Hurricane Center in the US said
Dorian was the strongest in modern times – and
parts of Florida have already started handing out
evacuation orders.
The NHC said there were “catastrophic condi-
tions” on the Abaco Islands, a group in the north-
ern Bahamas.
Millions of US residents, from Florida to North
Carolina, are waiting to see whether Hurricane
Dorian will change course, avoid landfall and head
north into the Atlantic Ocean.
Bahamas resident Tom Creenan said: “The prime
minister came out and said everybody in Abaco
should leave. But there’s no place to go.
“This is the strongest hurricane that’s ever hit in
the Bahamas.”
Some people have already left for capital Nassau,
but between 200 to 300 residents battened down
hatches in Great Guana Cay, where power has
already gone out. Forecasters are expecting two
feet of rain and 23ft storm surges.
US President Donald Trump tweeted: “Looking
like one of the largest hurricanes ever.”
