OUR DAILY
PUB QUIZ
I have been living
in the same council
house for 93 years
with Cyril, the youngest of seven, and his
parents after they married in 1953. It
became theirs when his father died a
month after the wedding and Cyril’s
mother went to live near his older sister.
The grandfather of 17 worked at
Grimethorpe Colliery for more than 40
years until he was made redundant in

  1. He did not fight in the Second
    World War as mining was
    deemed too important.
    Cyril said he had
    never considered exer-
    cising his right to buy
    the house.
    He said: “I don’t
    think you should.
    When Mrs Thatcher
    introduced the right
to buy, a lot of people
    round here bought
    their houses.
    “Then she shut all
    the pits and put thou-
    sands out of work.
    When they lost
    their jobs, they
    couldn’t afford
    their mortgages.”
    He added:
    “Whoever gets
    this after us
    will be lucky.”

HOME FOR HEROES Cyril
and Molly’s three-bed semi

BY LUCY THORNTON
A PENSIONER who moved into one
of Britain’s first council houses as a
baby will celebrate his 93rd birthday
there next month.
Cyril Hall, 92, was two months old
when his family moved into the modest
three-bedroom semi-detached.
The former miner and his wife
Molly, 85, took over the
tenancy from his parents
and have never moved.
Cyril said that the
only way he will leave
“will be in a box”.
The house in
Barnsley, South
Yorks, was one of
around 500,000 built
nationwide as part of a
commitment to build
“homes fit for heroes” after
the First World War.
Cyril’s family got
the keys on
December 14, 1926.
They had moved
from Liverpool
after his father
fought at Ypres.
Cyril said: “My
mum used to take
the war-wounded
for a walk and that’s
how they met.”
