is gearinguptomakefansgiggleonceagain
in hisnewseriesTheRighteousGemstones,
whichfollowsa famoustelevangelistfamily
whoareknownfortheirfaith–andgreed.
AdamstarsasKevinGemstone,theyoungest
brotherofthefamily,butsaysthisseriesisn’t
pokingfunat religion.
“WhenI had my first meetingwith [programme
creatorand star] DannyMcBride,he was like,
‘We’re not takingdown religionin general–
we’re takingdown specificallythe hypocrisy
of thesefamilieswhotakefromthechurchas
opposedtogivingback.’It’s aboutthehypocrisy
of someof thesemegachurches,butalsothe
innerdynamicsof thisfamily,”hetells.“I like
comedywhen the egg’s on your face as opposed
tomakingfunof someoneelse.”
Adam himselfgrew up Catholic,attending
churchtwice a week until his familyhad a change
of heart.
“I was 13 or somethingwhenwe movedto a
nicerneighbourhoodand the churchthere wanted
usto giveextramoneyto geta $50,000crystal
bowl.A bowl?!My mum was like, ‘We’re out!’
Then my grandparentspassedaway, andmy
dad was like, ‘We can stop going to churchnow!’”
helaughs.
“Itdoesn’t holda super-strongplacein my
life. But who’s tosayI don’t havekidsandthen
go,‘Oh, youalsohavetogotochurchuntil
Grandmadies and then we’re cool again’.
“I was alwaysjealousof my Christianfriends
whowouldgo to a megachurchbecauseit seemed
way more fun.There were,like,rock climbingwalls
andvideogamestoplay,and we just had a hard
woodenbenchto sit on and kneel.
“There’s a reasonthey’re workingso well
becausethey’re awesome.It’s likethecarnival
is thechurcheverySunday.Let’s eat somehot
dogs and learn about Jesus!”Thecomedianspreads the
word about his new show
