SCRUM Magazine – September 2019

(Barré) #1

What gives you the most satisfaction?
I really enjoy helping pupils reach their full potential in rugby - or the
many other sports we offer at Glenalmond - and as individuals. I find
supporting a pupil starting as a non-player to the point where they are
playing regularly and loving it just as rewarding as training a player to a
very high level of performance. Glenalmond is also very strong in music
and drama and it is brilliant to see pupils who are very focused in these
areas also choosing to play rugby and really enjoying it. They leave
school thinking rugby was fair and fun and they want to keep playing!

What has been a highlight for you?
It is very encouraging to see more and more parents come to watch
their children taking part in sport. However, one real highlight for
me was when Glenalmond 1st XV got through to the Boys Schools
Cup Final at BT Murrayfield in December 2017. That was a fantastic
experience for everyone involved!

What is in store for the next academic year at Glenalmond?
We’ve been investing substantially in our sports facilities, from our state-
of-the-art hockey pitches to our strength and conditioning facilities.
We’re also developing a new School of Golf, under the leadership of our
Head of Golf, Tim Mitchell, including building a brand new indoor facility
equipped with full simulator screens, in addition to our nine-hole on-site
golf course.

Tell us about the London Scottish partnership?
We were recently announced as the official School Partner of London
Scottish in a three-year partnership which will see us host the famous
rugby club for training and benefit from year-round input to their rugby
programme. It presents a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to get an
insight into top level training and to be inspired by exceptional players.

What sets Glenalmond apart?
As a school of only around 350 - 400 pupils I think we really punch
above our weight in the sporting world. We produce good players
through good coaching. We have around a dozen coaches involved in
working with the pupils and we also work closely with Perthshire Rugby
Club - a really valuable partnership.

And Glenalmond also has a reputation for superb food?
That’s true! The post-match meals are pretty legendary and we are
lucky to have an excellent catering team. The quality of the food here is
superb and that is really important when you are training hard, whatever
the sport. Our dining hall is very much in the style.
