ONES TO WATCH

Brodie Retallick
Position: Lock Club: Chiefs Age: 28
The giant lock is a former World Rugby Player of the Year, and he’s as good on the ball
as most three-quarters (his try against Australia last year is evidence alone of his ability
in the loose). One of the best in the world, Retallick and his long-time locking partner
Sam Whitelock are key to the All Blacks’ chances of success in Japan.

Rieko Ioane
Position: Wing Club: Blues Age: 22
The All Blacks’ number 11 jersey has been worn by some greats - Jonah Lomu, Joe
Rokocoko and now the flying Rieko Ioane, who lit up their series with the British and
Irish Lions two years ago and looks set to do the same at the Rugby World Cup.
One of the deadliest finishers in the world game, he’s another that defences will need
to be at their best to stop.

TJ Perenara
Position: Scrum-half Club: Hurricanes Age: 27
Likely to be used predominantly off the bench, the Hurricanes scrum-half can inject
pace into a game, while he also possesses the experience required to see the All
Blacks over the line in a tight encounter.
He’s perfected the art of running an inside support line to score a bucket load of tries

  • he’s chasing down Israel Folau for the Super Rugby try-scoring record - so expect to
see him in full flight in Japan.

Beauden Barrett
Position: Stand-off Club: Hurricanes Age: 28
Undoubtedly the best attacking stand-off in the world, Barrett will cause defence
coaches across the planet headaches ahead of the World Cup. Pace, vision and a
telescopic kicking game, he’s got the lot, and if the All Blacks’ forwards can get him
sufficient front-foot ball, it could spell danger for the rest of the world.
His goalkicking percentages may not match the likes of Owen Farrell or Jonny Sexton,
but Barrett’s talents will be one of the main draws for fans across the globe this autumn.
