100% Biker – August 2019

(ff) #1
Bridlington. Onlookers were aghast. Their beach
had been occupied like German towels at a resort.
Hundreds of bewildered spectators lined the waterfront
to watch this bizarre and curious gathering. Although
this year saw the eclectic mix of machinery multiply,
the riders and drivers all came with the same like-
minded and unpretentious attitude, their wristbands
showing a shared passion and a primal instinct for the
combustible experience and oily nostalgia.
It was also refreshing to see no overt branding. No
sponsors and manufacturers bullying the event—
just pure grass root enthusiasts. There were no
hucksters selling quinoa-infused pulled pig wraps,
straw smoked curd burgers or man bunned baristas
squirting chocolate ferns on coffee.
The head to head challenges continued throughout
the day. The motors screamed, yowled, misfired and
belched. Odd pairings lined up for a face off; rat rods
against classic sedans and Harleys against Hondas.
