A modern

romance!

Jane Austen’s unfinished

final novel is brought to

life in a lavish ITV drama

new

J

ust months before she
passed away in 1817 ,
Jane Austen began
writing a story with
a difference. Set
in a developing
seaside town,
the tale followed
the fortunes of
entrepreneurs
and businessmen,
all told through
the eyes of a
modern heroine
who most certainly
wasn’t looking
for a husband!
Austen completed only
11 chapters before becoming
gravely ill, but now her story
has been adapted and
expanded by Andrew Davies,

who also
adapted Pride
and Prejudice, in
a lavish, eight-
part ITV drama.
This week’s
opening episode
introduces
fearless heroine
Charlotte
Heywood (Rose
Williams), who is
invited to stay at
the fashionable
seaside town of Sanditon
by its chief architect, Tom
Parker (Kris Marshall), and his
wife, Mary (Kate Ashfield),
following a carriage accident.

‘Charlotte is more modern
than the Austen heroines
you’ve seen before,’ says Rose,
25. ‘She’s been raised on a
farm, so she’s practical, but
also headstrong and definitely
not focused on marriage.

Class act
‘When she finds herself in
Sanditon, it really is a whole
new world. She hasn’t come
across the upper classes
before and meets characters
she only imagined existed.’
Charlotte encounters Lady
Denham (Anne Reid) and her
inheritance-hungry relations,
Sir Edward Denham (Jack Fox)
and Clara Brereton (Lily
Sacofsky), plus an heiress
from the West Indies, Miss

Lambe (Crystal Clarke, playing
who’s believed to be Austen’s
first black character).
But Tom Parker’s disarming
brother, Sidney (Theo James),
makes an impression.
‘Charlotte and Sidney aren’t
fond of each other at first, but
their romance develops,’ says
Rose. ‘But Charlotte’s not
desperate to find a man.’
Austen’s original chapters
fill just the first half of this
week’s episode, but Rose
says the series captures
the essence of her writing.
‘It stays true to the initial
setting up of the story,’ says
Rose. ‘Andrew Davies has
taken these characters and
opened up their world in
such an exciting way.’ ■
