CARAVAN TEST

90 | September 2019 go! Drive & Camp

Ready for bed
The tent section’s floor measures 2 x 2 m, and two adults can
comfortably stand here and undress without elbowing each other
in the ribs – it’s even bigger than the open space of an average
caravan and you could conceivably fit an extra mattress in here.
There’s a light against the roof that illuminates the tent well.
The entire interior of the Tonga is one large bed, and the fold-up
mattress extends right up to the door. It’s easy to climb into
bed since the top of the mattress is 69 cm above the ground (as
opposed to your bed at home which is around 60 cm high). The
bed measures 2 x 1,3 m in size and is only a teensy bit narrower
than a double bed. When you sit on the mattress, there is ample
headroom so you don’t feel claustrophobic.

A nose for good food
A modular kitchen pulls out over the A-frame like a large
drawer, but first you have to remove a door with open-end
hinges. This door now becomes a worktop: above the wheel
there is another set of hinges in which the door fits, and a strut
onto the rim holds it firmly in place. This top is a ergonomical
89 cm above the ground, but because the door hangs upside
down, the lock’s swing mechanism may be slightly in the way.
The kitchen module, with a door on both sides, can now
be pulled out of the hull. The doors also open at right angles
to form a smaller worktop next to the cupboard. Each of the
cupboards in the two sides have two shelves. A kettle, all the
cutlery and a few bottles of wine all fit into form-fitted foam
in the left cupboard. A one-plate gas stove is in the opposite
cabinet – it is removable and you place it on the worktop next
to the cabinet when you want to use it.
The back of the cabinet forms the two wardrobes inside.
A freezer is drawn from the hull on the left, just behind the
kitchen cabinet.
