KIT BOX

AIRFIX

A

nother welcome re-release from Airfix in the shape of their 2011
tooling Curtiss Hawk 81.
It truly is a little gem of a kit which builds into a smart replica of
this ubiquitous fi ghter. Finely detailed panel lines are abundant with a
small but perfectly formed little cockpit interior. Neat touches include a
separately moulded rudder and opened radiator cooling fl aps, poseable undercar-
riage legs and though the canopy is moulded in the closed position only, it’s neatly

moulded and perfectly clear. A low part count of some 47 pieces means that this
kit should be enjoyed by everyone from the absolute beginner to the hobby to die-
hard fans that maybe want something quick and easy to quick.
Only one marking option is provided, that fl own by Flight Leader Charles
Holder, Third Squadron, American Volunteer Group, Kumming, China, 1942.
Decals are excellent with some very fi ne printed details for the stencils as well as
the Flying Tigers logo.

VERDICT

This is a neat kit that despite being cheap, offers high quality a parts, an accurate outline and ease of assembly. Simplicity also allows it to be built by a
beginner, so it appeals to everyone and that’s more than welcome! A neat kit then and a welcome reissue. (Mike Williams)
