Screen Time &
Parental Controls
The iOS parental controls are incorporated into the Screen Time feature, which
monitors your child’s phone use, including how much time they spend using each
app, and lets you set limits if you think they’re wasting too much time on certain
apps. Here we show you how to set up Screen Time and its services, and then
passcode protect it so your child can’t change your settings.
Setting up and using Screen Time
1
On your child’s iPhone, go to Settings

Screen Time and tap the Turn On
Screen Time option. If Screen Time is already
on, and it wasn’t specifically set up for a
child’s phone, turn it off and then tap Turn
On Screen Time.
2
The next screen gives you an outline
of what Screen Time can do. To
progress Tap Continue, at the foot of the
screen. You’re then asked whether this is
your own or your child’s phone. Tap This is
My Child’s Phone for extra options.
3
You can now set downtime, to specify
precisely when your child can use the
apps you approve in a later step. Tap Start
and set the time when downtime starts, then
do the same for End. You can skip this step
and set it up later if you wish.
Your Screen Time Passcode.
The passcode you use to set up Screen Time, on your child’s phone, is there to prevent
them from accessing Screen Time and changing your settings. Choose something
you can easily remember, and never give that passcode to your child. Doing so would
defeat the object of setting up parental controls.
