The Facebook App
Setting Parental Controls
Technically, you have to be 13 to have a Facebook account, but lots of younger
children set up Facebook profiles. If your child’s friends are all using it, then they’ll
want to join too, and forbidding them is likely to result in them doing so behind
your back. So instead, follow these simple rules and your kids can enjoy Facebook
with their friends and family with minimum risk.
Your Child and the Facebook App
1
Set up your child’s profile for them.
This way you get to set and keep the
password. Download the Facebook app on
your child’s phone, open it and tap the
Create New Account link to start.
2
When you get to the birthday entry,
remember only children of 13 and
above are allowed onto Facebook. If you set
a date that makes your child younger than
13, the account will not activate.
3
When done, add your own account as
a friend, so you can keep tabs on
what they get up to. Tell your child that if he
or she ever unfriends you, you’ll deactivate
their account; you have the password.
Facebook hoaxes and fakes.
Hoax messages claiming to be from businesses and organisations are common on
Facebook. For example, it’s often claimed money will be given to charity for every
share, or sharing a message will bring rewards. These are usually hoaxes. Remember,
if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is.
