Facebook Messenger
Using Parental Controls
Facebook recently introduced a Messenger app specifically for children, known as
Messenger Kids. Unfortunately, it’s currently available only in the United States, so
those elsewhere, using the regular Facebook Messenger, need to be kept secure.
Although no precautions are 100% effective, here’s a guide to a few settings you
can change for safety’s sake.
Blocking Unwanted Messages
1
If someone’s upsetting your child, by
sending threatening, sexualised or
otherwise unwanted messages, that person
can be blocked. In the Messenger app, tap
the Chats icon bottom left.
2
Swipe the offending messenger to the
left, and tap the Three-lines icon. In
the pop-up menu that arises, you can block
them by tapping the Block link, found near
the bottom in red.
3
You can also block a Messages user by
tapping their profile photo, to see
their profile, and scrolling down to the Block
link at the bottom. Tap it and you need never
see their missives again.
