Article Appreciation
Thank you for including the article “Busting
the Bro-Science” by Erin Calderone in the
Spring 2019 issue. I really appreciate the
approach of the answers, especially the
truth about heavy lifting — no, it won’t
make you look like a man! It was also
refreshing to hear another take, which
didn’t pit women as being inferior to men.
Thank you and keep up the good work!

LOL
I enjoyed the most recent issue but had to
chuckle at the reference to “cave women”
and how we don’t have to worry about T. rex
anymore in one article. Humans never had
to worry about T. rex. We are separated by
55 million years of evolution and never did
our paths cross, despite what the Flintstones
may tell us. The science teacher in me had to
call ya out!

Editor’s Note: Cindy — thanks for
the laugh! My mother was a science
teacher for 20-plus years, so I am sure
she will back you up on that!
Weighty Concerns
I just picked up Oxygen for the fi rst time —
the Spring 2019 issue — and really enjoyed
reading the articles on my long plane

ride. But I was curious why you print the
weight of the women featured in “Success
Stories” and “Future of Fitness?” I imagine
that many women look at those numbers
and cannot help but compare themselves.
I myself am fi t and healthy yet don’t come
close to the 114 pounds listed under one of
these women, and their stories of overcom-
ing trauma, eating disorders, loss, illness
and the stress of having a special needs
child should be more than enough to inspire
your readers without the weight “badges.”
Also, one of your models has obviously had
surgical breast augmentation, which, to
me, makes your message seem very mixed.
I am sure you don’t want to unintentionally
propagate the unhealthy body images you
are in the privileged position to fi ght against
in this modern age.
— TINA, VIA EMAIL
Editor’s Note:Hey Tina, thanks for
your note. You do bring up a good
point about listing the weights of the
models and coaches in the sidebars.
Personally, I am not a fan of using
weight as a measurement — either
for goals or for comparison with oth-
ers — since a scale only measures how
hard gravity is pulling you toward the
Earth’s center without accounting for
muscle mass, hydration, the time of the
month, and dozens of other factors that
can aff ect your scale weight for the
positive or negative. To be honest, we
have printed these departments in this
format for so long that I sort of forgot
about the metrics contained in the
sidebars, so thanks for the heads-up
— I will look into changing those out
in future issues. As for the model you
mentioned with breast augmentation
— people have surgical procedures
for one reason or another all the time,
and for all you or I know, this model
may have had severe breast cancer
that required a double mastectomy
and opted for implants post-op to
help her feel like a woman again.
Who knows? I try very hard not to be
judgmental about peoples’ decisions
about their own bodies and instead
hire a woman based on talent, merit
and athletic capacity — regardless of
her cup size.
THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK!
WE LOVE THAT OUR READERS ARE
SO SHARP AND INVOLVED.
