cedar. It tastes ripe but fresh
with a spicy, savoury undercurrent
to the lush, but balanced, sweet
blackcurrant and berry fruits.
A satisfying red.

Casa Silva Pintao Carmenere
Reserva 2017, Cochagua £10,
Marks & Spencer, 14% alcohol
Utterly typical of what is a
uniquely Chilean grape variety,
this wine has the most fabulous
aromas and a green, leafy, chalky
edge to the sweet black fruits.
It’s spicy, slightly minty, with
blackcurrant fruit, some pleasant

green flavours and a luscious
feel in the mouth.

Luis Felipe Edwards 360
Series Cabernet Franc 2015,
Colchagua Costa £14.99
a bottle or £9.99 each for
six, Majestic, 14% alcohol
Engaging blackcurrant pastille
fruit and a raspberry brightness
combine nicely in this fresh and
expressive cabernet franc. It
has a bit of savoury and herb
character, too, all of which helps
create a concentrated, fresh
and slightly chalky red with
real appeal.

Hielo y Fuego Chardonnay
2018, Central Valley £8.99,
virginwines.co.uk (0343 224
1001), 13% alcohol
Hielo y fuego translates as ice
and fire – and this is a tipple of
contrasts. It has delightfully rich
peach and pear fruit, but a
citrussy freshness, too.

Sauvignon Blanc Reserva
Privada 2018, Central Valley
£5.49, Lidl, 12% alcohol
A bracing and juicy white that
is zesty and grassy with fresh
citrus fruit, this one also fuses
a grapefruit brightness with
subtle green notes.

Riveras Sauvignon Blanc
2018, Leyda Valley £9.99,
Aldi, 13% alcohol
Trademark characters of tomato
leaf and green pepper, together
with pleasing elderflower and
citrus notes, make for a very
sophisticated sauvignon blanc.
The beautifully integrated green
characters bring it to life.

Tesco Finest Puemo
Carmenere 2017, Colchagua
£9, Tesco, 13.5% alcohol
Made by Concha y Toro, this
is a fine example of Chile’s own
red grape, carmenere. It has
rich, textured, smooth blackberry
and blackcurrant fruit with a
grainy, chalky edge. It is very
classy and ripe, with layers
of flavour and freshness.
