Speaking His Mind

What an exciting few years it has been for
Virgil Abloh. Shortly after the Paris shows
of both his collections for Off-White and
Louis Vuitton, the designer extraordinaire
has launched a glorified scrapbook, namely
“Figures of Speech.” The comprehensive
book compiles his much celebrated works
throughout his rise in the high-fashion and
design scene –including with Nike, Kanye West
and IKEA– in a catalogue style hardcover. Other
than presenting thousands of never been seen
photos and images, the book also has archives
of essays and interviews with influential names
in art and design such as photographer Taiye
Selasi, author Lou Stoppard, graphic designer
Michael Rock, architects Samir Bantal and Rem
Koolhaas, and fashion editor Anja Aronowsky
Cronberg. Launched as a collaboration with
the Museum of Contemporary Arts of Chicago
and Prestel publishing, it coincides with an
exhibition of the same name at said museum
that will run from June to September this year.

We all remembered
that night, UFC 2017.
The winning fighter, Cody
Garbrandt, fulfilled a five
year long promise: to win his
first UFC belt, and invited
his good friend, ten-year old
leukemia survivor, Maddux
Maple onto the ring. “The
Pact ” is about the beautiful
friendship between two
people of opposite polars,
who promised to each other
to win their respective battles.

In the “Bill Cunnigham
On The Street” author
Steven Stolman and John
Kurdewan joined forces
to compile thousands of
photographs, letters, notes
and a plethora of memorabilia
into this nearly 400-pages of
sartorial history that forms
Cunningham’s illustrious
five decade long career, while
documenting the rise of
New York into a cultural and
fashion capital.

Probably one of the
most provocative and
important writers of this
generation, Ta-Nehisi
Coates has once again
proven that he is indeed a
man of many expressions.
His debut novel, “The
Water Dancer,” brings us
through a dramatic survival
adventure of young slave
Hiram Walker over life at
the plantation, conspiracy
and a spark of dark fantasy.
