A male scalefin anthias displays in
open water at sunset in the Gulf of
Aqaba, Red Sea, Egypt. The higher
he dances during the courtship,
the more likely he is to attract
a mate.

A large colony of mountainous
star coral spawns at night in late
summer in the Caribbean Sea,
Cayman Islands. This backlit
photo shows the synchronous
release of bundles of eggs and
sperm from the polyps of the coral.
Most reef corals only spawn for
a few seconds each year.

The whip coral goby can be found,
unsurprisingly, around whip corals.
This image was taken in the
Tropical West Pacific Ocean, the
Philippines. Gobies perch
by creating a cup shape
with their pelvic fins.
