fawn,witha scatteringofdark-brownspots
andblotches.Head,throatandchestarenot
spotted.A shorterectilemanerunsdownthe
neckandontotheshoulders.Itscharacteristic
callsareoneofthemainidentifyingfactors- a combinationofwhoops, whines, yells,
grunts and giggles.

A widesub-Saharanrange,butabsentfrom
theequatorialforestbelt.It hasdisappeared
fromsomeareas.Offeredas a trophyanimal
inZambia,ZimbabweandTanzania,and
possiblyothers.Thestripedhyena(Hyaena
hyaena)is huntablein Tanzania.CONSERVATIONSTANDING
Noaccuratepopulationestimatesare
available,butit hasdeclinedinmany
placesacrossitsrange,butis stillcommon
inpartsofsouth-Central Africa, as well as
in East Africa..
