DESCRIPTION
A largecarnivorewithheavilybuilt
forequartersthatstandhigherthanthe
lightlybuilthindquarters.Headlargewith
prominent,roundedears,anda blackmuzzle.
Thetailis shortwitha coveringofcoarse
hair.Overallcoloris fawnish-yellowtogrey-
fawn,witha scatteringofdark-brownspots
andblotches.Head,throatandchestarenot
spotted.A shorterectilemanerunsdownthe
neckandontotheshoulders.Itscharacteristic
callsareoneofthemainidentifyingfactors

DISTRIBUTION
A widesub-Saharanrange,butabsentfrom
theequatorialforestbelt.It hasdisappeared
fromsomeareas.Offeredas a trophyanimal
inZambia,ZimbabweandTanzania,and
possiblyothers.Thestripedhyena(Hyaena
hyaena)is huntablein Tanzania.

CONSERVATIONSTANDING
Noaccuratepopulationestimatesare
available,butit hasdeclinedinmany
placesacrossitsrange,butis stillcommon
inpartsofsouth-Central Africa, as well as
in East Africa.
