twohours late because of a
warning lightont he driver’s
instrumentpanel,indicating a
mechanicalfailure.
Thewell-loaded,five-car train,
formed of Class 221 No.221128,
wasconsideredafailu re andall
the passengers hadto alightand
wait forthe next train to the South
West –the 09.00/1V58 Glasgow-
Penzanceservic ewhich, likeall
CrossCountry‘Voyager’and HST
125 trains,was not scheduledto
stop between Birmingham New
Street and Cheltenham Spa.

Thepick-up trainconsisted of
four coaches,meaning not all the
failed train’s passengerscould
be ac commodated, with many
havingto wait forthe next passing
SouthWest service. ThePenzance
train wastimedto leave at 15.40,
but because of havingto find
passenger spacelet alone seats,it
left17minutes late.
Those preventedfromboarding
wereeventually ableto travel
forwardonthe 14.05/1V59 from
ManchesterPiccadillyto Paignton
which, likethe previousfour-
coach train, made an unscheduled
stop and departedat16.10, thus
leaving the platform clear of
frustrated tr avellers.
Credit is dueto the crew of the
failed train on suchahot da yin
thatthey provided wate rfor their
former passengers and allowed
manytouse one of the train’s
toilets.The failed train eventually
left Bromsgrove at 16.10 as 5D56

introduction of the summer
timetable.
On May25, the servicewas
handledby No.158845, supported
by Class 156 No.156496 and
Class 142 Nos.142065/68/86.

ACORRESPONDENT had an
eventful outcome to ajourney on
the 15.26Leeds-Skipton on June
12.Theservic e, formed of Class
333 No.333010,washeld outside
Skipton station because of the
failure of aunit in the station.It
turnedout the unit–No. 333013
–had failed on the points crossing
therebyblocking all lines in and
out of the station.Afte rawhile it
wasdecidedto at tempt to clear
the blockage by No.333010
pushing the failed unit back into
platform 1.This pr oved to be
difficult and not fully successful.
Eventually,No. 333013was
pushed partway into platform 1
and passengers taken off.
It wasthen decidedto escort
passengers off No.333010 into the
nearbyTescocar park as the unit
could notreach the platform, this
wasaround 1½ hours laterthan
scheduledat around 17.45.In the
meantimeroutes in and out of the
stationwereblocked.
It has beenreportedstaff
both on the train and those
helping passengers off actedina
professional and friendly manner,
keeping travellers updated, with
safet yensured throughout the
process,and information about
farereclaimsgiven.

THE 13.21Leeds-Doncaster,with
Class 321 No.321903, departed
eightminutes late on June 18.It
lost another 12 minutesat South
Emsall when unableto transmit
the powertot he traction motors,
the train arrivingat Doncaster 20
minutes late.
