This Red Sox seasonis proofthat some
hangoverslinger longer than others.
The defending World Serieschampions
have meanderedthroughthe
followup to theirextraordinary
2018 season,and at this writ-
ing wereoutside lookingin at
the AmericanLeagueplayoff picture.
An opportunity to sparkthe team — and
fans’ interest — fizzled out Wednesday when
presidentof baseballoperationsDaveDom-
browskichoseto stand pat at the MLBtrading
deadline.
If the Red Sox are going to be aroundin Oc-
toberto defend theirtitle, it’s going to have to
happenwith a roster that has beenlethargic in
doingso thus far — and one that, not surpris-
ingly, hasn’t capturedthe attention of televi-
sion viewersquiteto the degreeit did a season
ago.
Throughthe All-Star break,Red Sox ratings
on NESNweredown14 percentfromthe same
pointa year ago in the Boston designated mar-
ket area. They averaged a 5.31 rating before the
All-Starbreak,per Sports BusinessJournal,cit-
ing NielsenMedia Researchdata.
Still, that was the seventh-highest average
rating amongthe 29 US-basedmajorleague
teamson a regionalcablenetwork baseball
broadcast. (Toronto Blue Jays ratings are not
included.)
The Brewerson Fox Sports Wisconsin had
the highest rating (6.34),followedby the Cardi-
nals (6.22),Twins (6.12),Indians(5.76), Reds
(5.71),and Pirates (5.38).
The Padres have had the highest increase
year-over-year, up 81 percent(4.17rating).
The Yankees, who lead the American
LeagueEast, are down26 percenton the Yes
Network (2.92).
Overall, MLBratings were down4 percent.
It shouldbe notedthat whiletheseratings
offer an apples-to-applescomparison between
regional cablenetworks in differentmarkets,
they do not tell the complete picture of Red Sox

viewership.
There are eightotherDMAs in the NESN/
Red Sox region that aren’t part of the Boston
viewership. The numbersalso do not include
out-of-homeviewership(suchas groupsof fans
watchingat a bar or restaurant),or NESNgo
app and online viewership.
In the periodthroughthe July 7 All-Star
Game,the average numberof peoplewho
watcheda Red Sox gameacross New England
in thosenine DMAs was approximately
700,000,excludingout-of-homemeasurement
and NESNgo, whichis averagingjust under
10,000per game,accordingto NESN.
Red Sox ratings wereaffected earlyby an
11-gameroad trip to start the season, and the
Bruins’run to the Stanley Cup Finalas well as
the Celtics’ two roundsof NBA playoff games
had someaffect in the first half.
The broadcasts averaged 882,000viewersin
15 gamesfromthe All-StarbreakthroughJuly
30.
One last thought: I doubtthis has even a
scintilla of impact on viewership, but NESN’s
increasinghabitof cutting it closecomingback
fromcommercialbreaksis extremelyannoy-
ing. Whenthe broadcast returnedfroma com-
mercialbreakWednesday night,RickPorcello
was alreadyin his windupand aboutto deliver
a meatball that the Rays’KevinKiermaier
wouldhit for a homerun. They’re going to miss
somethingimportant at some point.

To o easylistening?
“TheGregHillShow” got off to a slow start
in its first weekon WEEI,thoughit was amus-
ing that it openedMonday with the Zac Brown
Band’s “Chicken Fried,” a clever way of address-
ing longstandingrumors (dating to 2013)that
WEEImightend up a country musicstation.
Hill, who had beenat WAAF for 28 years,is
a staple in the market, but his laidbackstyle
seemedunfamiliar to longtime WEEIlisteners.
The showdid lack energy in its first couple
of days, but an adjustmentperiodis under-
standable, with Hill, co-hostsDanielleMurr
andNick“Fitzy”Stevenstrying to meshwith
holdoverproducersChris CurtisandKen Laird.
(Anecdotally, I did receivequitea bit of corre-
spondencefromlisteners happythat Stevens is
getting a real shot.)
I do get the sensethat thosewho raced to
socialmediato say that they had alreadygiven
up on the show(many who weretrying to ap-
peaseKirk Minihane, who has beenburying it
on his Barstool podcast) alreadyhad their
mindsmadeup before listening.
ThoughHill’s showon WAAF had the same
sharein the spring as WEEI’s “Mut and Calla-
han” (6.5),it’s going to be an uphill battle to
win over an audiencethat was used to a more
combative approach. But it deserves time to de-
velop.EvenMike Salkgot a year.
