1 Very lightly write your word in pencil. You will be able to rub
it out afterwards.
2 With some pressure on your brush tip, start with a thick
downstroke, be consistent with your pressure, changing
it will result in an uneven line. Then take your pen off the
paper.
3 Where the letter has a thinner stroke, with a very light touch,
do a thin upstroke. To make these strokes neat takes
practice, but you will get there.

technique 1:
the Lettering
The lettering itself is very
important to get right, then it’s all
the other techniques that really
make it stand out. I start with a
lighter colour.

Lettering for

Mixed Media

Designer tip...
Use Indian Ink or permanent
ink brush pens over mixed media
acrylic paint, watercolour pens are
transparent and don’t show up
as well over colour.
