RACING AHEAD

GP Cerami (July 25)
Britain’s Peter Kennaugh won
12 months ago, his last race
victory before he quit the
sport this spring. A classic
Belgian parcours featuring a
plethora of small rises, Bryan
Coquard (Vital Concept-B&B
Hotels) will be hoping for a
sprint finish.

Tour de Wallonie (July 27-31)
Belgian riders have won six of
the last eight editions and the
five-stage race is expected to
be fought very closely. Stage
one should appease the
sprinters but the following
four stages lend themselves
to attacks and breakaways.
Stage three rides up to Signal
de Botrange, the country’s
highest point at 692m.

Prueba Villafranca de Ordizia
(July 25)
There are no high mountains
to contend with, but neither is
there any respite in this 167km
race in the Basque Country.
Simon Yates (Mitchelton-
Scott) won in 2016 and was
second last year, but Movistar
are the only WorldTour team
competing this time around.

South Coast Classic (July 28)
A new race in the British
calendar, both the men’s and
women’s domestic pelotons
will race a tough course
centred around the climb of
Beachy Head.

Volta a Portugal
(July 31- August 11)
Raúl Alarcón (W52-FC Porto)
is aiming for a third successive
victory in the 11-stage tour of
the Iberian country. One of
the toughest races on the
calendar, summit finishes on
stages four, seven and nine
will help shape the final
general classification, which
Alarcón’s team-mate Edgar
Pinto will also be targeting.
