Country Gardens – July 2019

BUILDING PERSONALITY

Garden sheds serve a practical purpose, but there’s room for play too. Julie
Lindquist has tea with grandkids, reads garden magazines, and relaxes in her
shed in summer; during winter, the shed provides storage. Here are her tips for
creating a customized space:

SHEDS FILL UP FAST, so if space
allows, make yours larger than you
think you’ll need. Julie felt her last
shed was too narrow at 8×12 feet,
but her new 10×10-foot space is
just right.

CHOOSE A POURED CONCRETE

SLAB. It’s inexpensive and alleviates
any concerns about floor rot.

LET YOUR PASSIONS INSPIRE

YOUR DESIGN. Vintage windows
and doors sparked Julie’s shed style,
but other elements such as corbels,
barn siding, or even a weather vane
can inform your design.

WHEN CHOOSING SIDING, TAKE

CUES FROM THE STRUCTURE’S

SURROUNDINGS and nearby
buildings, and decide whether you
want your shed to blend in or stand
out. Options to consider include old
barnwood, cedar shakes, walls of
windows, or a mix.

REMEMBER THE EXTRAS THAT

WILL ADD A HOMEY TOUCH, such
as a small porch or stoop, a cupola,
shutters, lighting, gingerbread trim,
flower boxes, or a bench.
