MUSIC TO YOUR EARS
Released last autumn is Marty Mone’s second album,
Steer the Rear, a follow-up to 2015’s Hit the Diff and
the standalone single Slip the Clutch, which has since
become a trucker’s anthem. Marty grew up around
trucks, tractors and excavators and progressed to driving them
for a living. Having learned to play the guitar aged 12, he started writing
songs inspired by life in the driving seat. He mixes his own albums and
directs his own music videos too, and even drives his own Scania R
Topline tour truck to shows. Steer the Rear is tremendous fun and pushes
the boundaries of traditional modern Irish country music. Marty Mone has
created his own genre with his stories of normal hard-working guys, the
excitement, the worry and the sacrifices made from life on the road. Buy
the albums and catch him live if you can at one of his many gigs over the
summer. Guaranteed to get your foot tapping. Dougie Rankine

HAULIER HISTORY

THE BEST IN THE LONG RUN

  • WEBSITE OF THE MONTH •

W & J Riding was a long-
established and well-loved
haulier from Longridge, near
Preston, operating from 1922
to 1995 when TDG took over.
This simple but beautifully
in-depth website details the
entire history of the company
in the greatest detail, with
significant input from former
director Tom Riding.
The company was a big
user of British trucks and
pretty much everything it ever
ran is detailed here, from the
purchase price, who drove it
and the work it did to what
happened to it at the end of its
service life. There’s also
background information on the

models themselves; fans of
Fodens, ERFs and Seddon
Atkinsons are in for a huge
treat. Even the workshop
service vans get a section
devoted to them.
There’s just so much
lovingly-compiled information
here; you can lose hours
clicking through all the
different sections, which
contain hundreds of photos of
the trucks in action. There’s
also a link to a YouTube video
on the company, produced in
the early ’90s. British
transport history and
nostalgia at its very best.

can operate on either 12V or
24V and is 380mm high,
350mm wide and 585mm deep.
