This might be controversial, but
you won’t hear me talking about “online
genealogy.” In this day and age, all genealo-
gy research involves the Internet, so saying
“online genealogy” is redundant.
Even if you aren’t building a family tree
using Ancestry.com, you likely have a soft-
ware program that has syncing capabilities
with the site. And where would we be with-
out libraries and archives, many of whom
catalog their holdings online? Whether we
like it or not, the Internet has revolutionized
how we research.
So instead of focusing on “online” geneal-
ogy, we’re showing you how to do geneal-
ogy in the 21st century—which, inevitably,
involves the Internet. This issue contains our
20th annual list of the 101 Best Websites for
Genealogy (page 18). Though its rogues gal-
lery of websites has changed in the past two
decades, the list’s goal is still the same: to
highlight the most useful online resources.
To complement this list, we’ve also includ-
ed some handy tips for using FamilySearch.
org (page 48) and a worksheet for keeping
track of your website login info (page 12).
Research on the web doesn’t just save
you time—it can also save you money. I’ve
put together a list of some of my favorite
genealogy budget-saving tips (page 28) to
help you take advantage of free websites
and resources.
The ease and speed with which we’re
learning about our families are huge boons
to our research, but they can also lead to
emotional discoveries about our past. Con-
tributing Editor Sunny Jane Morton shares
stories of researchers who had to make
peace with uncomfortable truths in their
families (page 54).
I, for one, welcome our new digital over-
lords. You should too—there’s a whole world
wide web to see.
