All loved ups

...and downs

BY ASHLEIGH RAINBIRD Diary Editor
THE finale was one of the closest battles in
the show’s five-year history, with bookies
changing their favourites right up until
voting ended.
Each finalist could now be on their way
to making £1million, after 15 former
contestants have gone on to earn a million.
Big-money clothing deals are worth up to
£250,000 and some Series 5 contestants
have already lined up a string of club
appearances, which netted £300,000 for
some of last year’s Islanders.
Sponsored social media posts could earn
up to £15,000 per post, with glossy
magazine deals and spin-off appearances
on reality shows such as Celebs Go Dating
and Dancing on Ice also potential earners.
Last night saw four couples make
declarations of love to one another before
the live final result.
Molly-Mae Hague told her “best friend”
Tommy Fury: “I’ve never felt feelings like
this in my entire life. I love you so much and
I can’t wait for the adventures that we
haven’t even dreamed of yet.”
STRUGGLED
Tommy threw his prompt cards on the
floor, saying he wanted to speak from the
heart, and telling Molly-Mae: “I would
literally crawl to the moon and back for you
to make you happy. You’re my everything.”
Maura Higgins told dancer Curtis
Pritchard she had struggled watching him
partnered up with former Islander Amy
Hart, gushing: “I had to spend my first few
weeks watching somebody else fall in love
with you, when all I really wanted was it to
be me you were dancing with.”
Curtis described her as a “princess” and
joked: “I may have tamed Hurricane Maura.”
Amber Gill, who overcame her heartache
from former flame Michael Griffiths
dumping her, thanked her partner Greg
O’Shea for “helping to build me back up”.
Greg wrote her a poem and reassured
Amber: “It’s OK if we aren’t the first couple
to cross the line.”
Ovie Soko told model India Reynolds:
“You’ve even had Mr Cool feeling nervous.”
India told him: “You were carved by angels.”
Meanwhile, media watchdog Ofcom
yesterday proposed two new rules to
protect participants in TV and radio shows.
The rules state that “due care must be
taken over the welfare, wellbeing and
dignity of participants in programmes”. The
second states that “participants must not
be caused unjustified distress or anxiety...”.

Producers, accused in the past of
riling contestants, supposedly
“banned” sex this time.
In the end, the controversial
dramas of previous series, such as
Zara Holland losing her Miss Great
Britain title for having sex in the
hideaway, or Ofcom receiving 2,
complaints over Dani Dyer’s
distress, were missing.
In fact, this year’s competitors

were more likely to make each
other a morning coffee than get
into slanging matches.

downs from the year Love
Island finally grew up...

After spending a few days apart
in the Casa Amor challenge,
Tommy decided the time was
right to make Molly-Mae his
girlfriend. Roping in the
assistance of her stuffed toy
elephant, Ellie-Belly, the
20-year-old boxer sprinkled the
terrace with rose petals before
telling Molly-Mae she was “his
everything”.

BAD GEOGRAPHY

Jourdan, Joanna and Belle
proved that geography wasn’t
their strong point when they
puzzled over the locations of
Dublin, Edinburgh, Rome and
Barcelona. Joanna pondered:
“Is Italy in Rome or
Rome in Italy?”
While Jourdan,
right, announced
to the group:
“Barcelona is
in Italy.”

REVIEW

LOVE Island 5 is best summed
up by one fact: it became clear
during last night’s final that,
really, anyone could win it.
Every other year it’s been
obvious who has it in the bag.
This time it was different. It was
the perfect epitaph for this
constantly evolving series – just
when you thought you knew
where you were, everything
changed. Eh, Jordan?
We saw the full gamut of
human emotions as the
contestants opened their
hearts and lives. No one
was who they appeared
to be at first. Sometimes
it was a genuinely faith-
restoring surprise.
Other times, it made
you depressed to be
alive. Jordan. Michael.
Curtis. Michael again.
Above all, it was
hugely watchable.
Missing you
already, Love Island!
Not you though,
Michael.

Island

still a

stunner

O

ver the past four years,
Love Island has shocked
with fights, proposals and
even sex on screen.
So there were concerns about
how this series would pan out.
Some questioned whether it
should be aired at all, following the
suicides of former islanders Mike
Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon.
