REDUCE THE SIZE
Open the portrait
then press Cmd/Ctrl+J
to duplicate the layer.
Grab the Move tool and
check Auto-Select and
Show Transform Controls
in the options. Click on
the bounding box then
Alt-drag the corner in to
make the layer smaller.
On the bottom layer, go
to Edit > Fill, choose Use:
White and click OK.

CUT OUT THE
SUBJECT
Grab the Quick Selection
tool and paint over the
white backdrop to select
it. Click Select And Mask
followed by Invert. To
improve the selection
edge, set Radius to 10px,
check Smart Radius and
paint around the hair
with the Refine Radius
brush. Set Output to:
Layer Mask and click OK.

SELECT THE
PATTERN
Use the Quick Selection
tool to paint over the
orange parts of the dress
below the arm to select
the various strips of
color. Hold Alt and paint
to subtract if the tool
picks up any unwanted
areas. Once you have a
decent selection, press
Cmd/Ctrl+J to copy the
pattern to a new layer.
