RIP Cyril Wigg
THE passing of a colossus of
the Norfolk Broads angling
scene, Cyril Wigg, was
mourned today (Tuesday)
by friends and family, in
a service at Norwich’s St.
Faith’s Crematorium.
Aged 93, Cyril lost his
battle with cancer in
late May. He is survived
by his wife of 67 years,
June, daughter Avril and
granddaughter Heidi.
A founder member and
president of Norwich and
District Angling Association,
Cyril was a key fi gure in
securing fi shing rights on
the Rivers Bure, Thurne and
Ant.
Many match anglers
from further afi eld will
remember his three decades
of service as main organiser
of the annual Broads
Championships Open, which
drew entries of 600-plus
in the 1960, ’70s and early-
’80s.
Paying tribute on the
club’s Facebook page,
Norwich DAA kingpin Tony
Gibbons said: “Without
doubt, the angling available
today on the Broads for club
members and visitors alike
is down to Cyril’s hard work
and dedication.”
