suspended in mid-air with varieties of air
plants that obtain their nourishment from
the air. When her paintings are finished she
takes time to contemplate the result and then
adds symbols and phrases in gold lettering.
On Symbiotes I she has added the words
“multum” and “parvo” from the Latin phrase
“multum in parvo” meaning “much in a
small place.”
Kevin Sloan is a storyteller who creates
complex narratives. Last year, after a hiatus from
exhibiting, he reemerged with a new focus.
He said at the time, “I’m less interested

in the work as light-hearted...I still want to
create beautiful and stunning paintings, but
in the context of the world I live in, with eyes
wide open.”
In Migration Interrupted he paints a
story of a natural process disrupted by the
interventions of today’s world. A Canada goose
is capable of flying 1,500 miles a day in the
right conditions. In the painting it is slowed to
the pace of a turtle as it is entwined with an
extension cord.
Sloan writes, “I try to create new symbols,
like when I use an orange industrial electrical

extension cord. When this cord is interacting
with an animal I see it as a symbol of
entanglement and the risks to the natural world
associated with our need for electrical power.”
Monarch butterflies travel 3,000 miles to
their winter home in Mexico—although it
takes four generations of them to complete the
journey. Their migration is affected by human
intervention as well and Sloan depicts them
reduced to the speed of the entangled goose.
In the pages of this special collector’s focus,
readers will find ornithological works of art from
some of the West’s leading artists and galleries.
