The accolade of ‘genius’ gets
bandied around too easily these
days, especially in Hollywood, but few
could deny Stanley Kubrick’s worthiness
of that crown. One of cinema’s greatest
auteur directors, he would have been 90
last July had we not been cruelly robbed
of his talent in 1999.
This suitably reverent website
recognises that birthday with a lavish,
rich digital celebration of a life’s work.
Where no introduction is required,
we land on the looming “KUB-RICK”
marquee that has become an enduring
trademark since Eyes Wide Shut,
Kubrick’s cryptic final act. From here,
Ukrainian designers Tubik Studio serve
up not just a biography of the man
but also a vivid retrospective of ten
career-defining titles. Infinite scroll is
employed brilliantly here to float bold
nuggets of typography and photographic
assets into view and trigger a number of
CSS animations.
Great care has been taken to
reimagine the original theatrical posters
when transitioning between each film,
while also adding subtle dynamism
to images in order to evoke famous
scenes. Of lasting note is the stylish
use of the Acumin Pro font family to
format fascinating narrative paragraphs
and quotes, all of which adds real
effectiveness to the editorial.
