Senses of Malaysia – July 18, 2019

(WallPaper) #1

different clubs, societies, and external
parties.

Finally, how about the lifestyle and
“outside of school” offerings in Malaysia
(and/or Kuala Lumpur)? Are you able to
have a good balance of social life and
academic life here?
I manage to balance out my study-social
life. Malaysia has many places to hang out
and explore. Sunway City’s connectivity
makes everything very convenient, and
walking to the mall is just 10 minutes
away, so most of our gatherings are done
there.

Do you find the cost of living – eating
out, activities, social pursuits – to be
affordable?
The cost of living can be very low or high,
depending on how you spend. The food
here can be as low as RM1.50 for a plate of
roti canai.

What is your home country? How long
have you been in Malaysia?
I am from Lithuania, though having lived
in the UK since I was 13. Since September
2018, I have lived in Malaysia.

What motivated you to look to Malaysia
for your education plans? Prices? Tropical
location? Family or friends?
I had the options of either studying in
China or Malaysia, and I chose Malaysia as
I wanted to experience living in a tropical
country.

Feel free to tell us about the degree
programme you’re pursuing.
I am pursuing a Masters in electrical and
electronic engineering. Hopefully in two
years, I will walk out with the certificate
and a special ribbon.

University/College:
University of Nottingham

Has the academic programme been
satisfactory? Do you find the coursework
engaging?
The UK offers a lot more than UNM.
A great example would be the sports
complex difference, but UNM does
provide ample facilities such as a
swimming pool, multipurpose field,
indoor court, etc., seeing as we organise
a global event known as Nottingham
Tri Campus Games. It’s where three
campuses gather and compete in
different kind of sports. Study-wise, both
universities have their ups and downs,
but the professors are both experts in
their own fields and helpful to students.

What about the extracurricular activities
offered by your school? Are those part of
your life?
Both universities offer a lot of societies
and sports teams, although in the UK
there is a higher diversity for that.
Fortunately when I came to the student
fair in UNMC, I was quite overwhelmed
but managed to place myself and pursued
Rugby and Martial arts.

Finally, how about the lifestyle and
“outside of school” offerings in Malaysia
(and/or Kuala Lumpur)? Are you able to
have a good balance of social life and
academic life here?
Nottingham is pretty boring apart from
university, and there isn’t much to do
apart from the nightlife, whereas KL offers
extra activities especially during the day
where we can go for shopping, hiking
(closest would be Broga Hill), and trying
different Malaysian cuisines. There is also
the chance to visit cultural places such as
the mosque in Putrajaya, Pasar Seni, and
the ability to travel easily to other places
like Melaka.

Do you find the cost of living – eating
out, activities, social pursuits – to be
affordable?
Everything seems more affordable, the
prices seem lower; however, there are
things that keep the same price, and these
things make you conscious on how you
spend money. When I came to Malaysia,
I wasn’t shocked by the prices but most
of the goods are affordable and worth the
money.

Yes, very satisfying and all our course

your life?
Yes, there are lots to occupy us as we
constantly get emails about different
