Add a touch of floral fancy to your seating
with fabric flowers

SHoPPING LISt
l 25cm cream Egyptian draping muslin fabric,
£4.50 per m, Abakhan Fabrics l scissors l needle
and thread l one fat quarter of green fabric
l fusible interfacing l iron l pinking shears
l green embroidery thread l 20.3cm grapevine
wreath, £3, Hobbycraft l glue gun
l pearlescent beads l one self-cover button

1

Begin by making your blooms. For each flower,
cut a 30cm x 5cm strip of muslin, then fold it over
onto itself three times until it measures roughly 10cm
x 5cm and has three layers. Use sharp dressmaking
shears to cut a wavy line down one long edge,
working through all layers, then unfold. To make
slightly smaller flowers, cut a narrower strip.

2

Use a needle and a long length of thread to work
a straight, wide hand stitch down the straight
edge of each fabric strip. Pull each thread gently to
gather the fabric up until it coils round onto itself
and forms a flower shape. Use a few small hand
stitches to hold each flower together.

3

Affix heavyweight fusible interfacing to the back
of a piece of green cotton, then use pinking
shears to cut several leaf shapes out. Fold each one
in half to mark the centre, then hand stitch down
the middle of each to decorate. Use a dab of hot
glue on the back of each leaf to attach them to one
side of a grapevine wreath, then add the flowers
on top. Finish by adding a pearlescent bead to
the centre of each smaller flower, and a self-cover
button (wrapped in muslin) to the middle of the
largest bloom.

Paper bouquet

1

Begin by making the stems. For each
flower, take five pieces of silver hobby
wire and hold them together. Wrap green
flower tape around them tightly to bind
them. Next, cut the petals – for each
flower, cut eight petal shapes from tissue paper, varying
them slightly in size and shape for a more realistic finish.

2

Make the stamen. For each flower, cut one 15cm x 2cm strip
from both yellow and orange tissue paper, then hold them
together. Snip all along one long edge at 1mm intervals to fringe
the paper. Starting at one end, glue the fringed paper to the top
of your stem, then wrap it tightly, adding a dab of glue every few
centimetres. Leave to dry, then fan out the fringed paper.

3

One by one, glue the petals around the stamen, sticking and overlapping the
bottoms of each one, then fanning them out to create the bloom. Gather your
finished flowers together and wrap a piece of hessian fabric around them, then tie
a length of twine around the bunch to finish.
