Quilting Arts

(Martin Jones) #1

  1. Set up an ironing surface with all
of the appliqué pieces ready to
fuse on top of the muslin. Begin
    to fuse black appliqué pieces
    to the muslin, remembering
    to insert background pieces in
    between areas. Work slowly
    and fuse small sections until
all of the pieces are fused in
place. This process is like fi tting
a puzzle together. Refer to the
    original drawing for placement
of all of the elements. Fuse
    the facial features last. When
    completed, all fabrics should
    tuck under the black appliqué
and none of the muslin should
    show.

  2. Make a quilt sandwich with the
    appliquéd quilt top, batting, and
    backing. Using a walking foot
and black thread, quilt all edges
    of the black appliqué^1 ⁄ 16 " from
the edge. Use a normal stitch
    length for most quilting and
reduce the stitch length when in
tiny areas such as eyelashes. The
negative space can be quilted to
complement the fabric or in any
    desired pattern.
TIP: I always stitch fully around the
background pieces to ensure they will
not move out from under the black
    appliqué.

  3. Bind as desired.
    The portrait should stand on
its own—refl ecting the Pop Art
    theme—so don’t overdo it with
    embellishment. However, I do
    accentuate the eyes and mouth
with a dab of glitter nail polish,
occasionally add a fl ower to the
subject’s hair, or insert an earring
when I think it adds to the
    composition.
