Quilting Arts

(Martin Jones) #1

  1. Cover your work surface with
    plastic sheeting.

  2. Place the gelatin plate on top of
a piece of folded muslin. The
    muslin prevents the plate from
sliding on the plastic and will
    catch excess paint.

  3. Place a small piece of PFD fabric
next to the printing plate; this
will be used to clean the brayer.

TIP: Th is fabric usually ends up looking
great and is a nice addition to your fabric
collection. Change the direction in which
you clean the brayer on the fabric to add
interest.

Basic prints

  1. Place a few drops of paint on
the plate (fi gure 1) and roll with
a brayer to combine. Cover an
area large enough for the stencil
shape you plan to use. You do
not need to cover the entire
    plate, unless you are working
    with a very large shape.

  2. Before printing, consider
whether to add texture or to
    leave the paint surface smooth.
To add texture, ‘draw’ on the
paint with a cotton swab, a
    paintbrush, a comb, an old
toothbrush, etc., or add a resist
    element, such as strands of
    thread. Work quickly to prevent
the paint from drying on the
    plate.

  3. Place the stencil on top of the
paint. (fi gure 2) If any paint
    extends past the template, cover
it with paper towels to avoid
    getting unwanted paint on the
    fi gure 2 fabric.
