To make a ring, (fi gure 6) combine
a stencil with one of the cut-out
shapes, using it as a mask.

  1. Repeat “Basic Prints” steps 1
    and 2.

  2. Place a stencil on the paint
and then place 1 of the shapes
    inside the stencil. Repeat “Basic
    Prints” steps 3–5.

  3. Repeat these steps until you are
happy with the fabric. (fi gure 7)

NOTE: Allow the paint to dry
between steps and before making
additional monoprints on the
cloth. Heat set from the front by
placing a clean cloth on top and
using a dry iron in the correct

setting for the type of fabric you
used. Repeat from the back. Work
with larger pieces of fabric and
place several shapes together in a
composition to create art cloth.

Monoprinting allows you
to create cloth for quilts, wall
hangings, pillows, and more. If you
love a piece as it is, you can stretch
it on canvas and frame it. The
artwork shown here was all closely
machine quilted with 50wt cotton
thread in different colors to match
the ‘rocks.’ The rings were left
unquilted and then satin stitched
by hand using 12wt variegated
cotton thread to add texture and
interest.
