ON SHEER FABRICS

by Linda Nelson Johnson

t

his technique evolved
from my desire to create
an illusion of depth in my
artwork. Each attempt
to achieve my goal led to
valuable information about
materials and techniques.
For example, my fi rst
exploration taught me that
if I wanted to paint on sheer
fabric I needed to place the
sheer on plastic and wait for
the paint to dry. When the
acrylic paint dries it forms a
plastic surface that sticks to
the sheer weave. These tools
and experiments helped
refi ne my techniques. I now
make multi-layered art quilts
with a painted sheer top that
freely fl ows off of the quilted
background. This article
focuses on my method of
painting on sheers as a way
to create dimension.
