It’sbeennearly 20 yearssince
the ’90s Aussie phenomenon
that was SeaChange left our
screens. Now the drama is
back, with original stars Sigrid
Thornton, Kerry Armstrong,
John Howard and Kevin
Harrington joined by Darren
McMullen and Brooke Satchwell
to entice a new generation to
the cosy – and clearly sexier!

  • shores of Pearl Bay.
We chat to Darren, who was
    lured back Down Under from
a stint in Hollywood to take
up the role of hunky marine
    biologist Findlay Knox. “I am
    in heaven,” says the former
host of The Voice, who’s been
able to take dips in between
takes. “It’s really one of those
    pinch-me jobs.”
    And the 37-year-old has his
    fingers crossed that fans old
and new are just as stoked
    with the reimagined TV series...

Hi, Darren! So who do you
think will love the new
SeaChange? We hope we
capture a whole new audience
who have never seen it before
and we can do 20 more seasons.
Were you a fan of the original
series? No, I didn’t really know
what a massive deal it was till
I got the job. Then the pressure
kind of kicked in and I’m like,
“Oh, shit, I better not screw
this up!”

Didyoustepupyourworkouts
when you saw that the script
called for you to be topless?
I did! The character description
was something like, “Findlay
is an impossibly handsome,
ripped, marine biologist.”
I was thinking, “I’m not
any of those things.” I’m
certainly not ripped and
impossibly handsome.
Is anyone impossibly
handsome? Ricky Martin
maybe?! So that was a lot
of pressure. I’d never been
to the gym. When I was
offered the role, I had
two weeks and I was
like, “Great, better get
to work then!” I met
the trainer and asked,
“What can we do?”
He said, “No carbs
at all.” There go
all my favourite
foods! And then he
said, “No alcohol.”
I laughed and said,
“Not going to happen

  • give me another
    option.” So I’ve been
    drinking vodka sodas ever
since and I cannot wait to
guzzle my first bottle of wine.
    Gotta love those vodka sodas!
Why do you think reboots are
    having a moment? Maybe all
the new ideas are just crap!
    SeaChange premieres 8.45pm
    Tuesday August 6 on Nine
