WHAT TO DO
WHEN THINGS GET,
WELL, WEIRD
BY SYDNEY ADAMSON
AND SARAH WASSNER FLYNN
#thatfeelingwhen...YOU HAD
A FEW FAB DATES WITH YOUR
LONGTIME CRUSH, WHO THEN
PROMPTLY GHOSTED YOU. NOW
THEY ARE IN THREE OF YOUR
CLASSES, SO YOU HAVE TO SEE
THEM EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
DEAL WITH IT: Sure, it seems
super twisted that your schedule
is synched up with the person
who basically broke your heart.
But think of it like this: It’s the
surefire way to get over it all
for good. How? Maybe you were
so charmed by the idea of your
crush, you ignored some of their
not-so-cute qualities (like the
way they criticize classmates
any chance they get). Now that
you’re breathing the same air for
hours a day, some of that may
seem much more obvious. The
bottom line? In class, pay atten-
tion to your teacher—and not to
your crush. Smile and laugh and
answer questions with confi-
dence. Maybe they’ll realize their
YOUR BIGGEST
BACK-TO-SCHoOL
mistake or maybe they won’t.
Either way, you come out as the
bigger—and better—person.
#thatfeelingwhen...YOU DATED
YOUR BESTIE FOR A FEW
WEEKS—AND IT ENDED BADLY.
SUDDENLY, YOUR SHOULDER
TO CRY ON IS THE ONE YOU’RE
CRYING OVER.
DEAL WITH IT: You can’t even go
to your locker without tearing
up over the fact that your bestie
won’t be meeting you in between
classes. You miss them being
there, but you both said bad
things and you’re still reeling.
Your best bet? Invest time in your
extracurrics, your schoolwork,
your fam and other friends (or
make it your mission to seek out
new ones). If you find yourself
missing the friendship, reach out
when it feels appropriate. Test
the waters with a catch-up over
smoothies and go from there.
#thatfeelingwhen...YOU COOLED
THINGS OFF WITH YOUR BAE,
BUT NOW YOU REALIZE YOU
MADE THE WRONG CALL.
BECAUSE WHILE IT *SEEMED*
LIKE A GOOD IDEA NOT TO HAVE
THE PRESSURE ON BOTH OF
YOU TO KEEP IN TOUCH WHILE
YOU SPENT SUMMER SEPAR-
ATELY, NOW YOU JUST WANT
THEM BACK IN YOUR LIFE.
DEAL WITH IT: Spoiler alert:
Feelings don’t go away overnight.
So if you’re still thinking about
them, chances are they are, too.
While it’s tough to ’fess up to
your faults, this is the time to
do so. Ask if they can meet you
after school and simply say, “I
know I hurt your feelings, and I’m
sorry. I do like you, and I’d love to
grab some brunch and see where
this goes.” Just be sure to do
this in person—not over text—so
they know your feelings are the
real deal. And whatever their
response? Respect it and either
move forward or move on.
#thatfeelingwhen...YOU AND
BAE BROKE UP, BUT NOW THAT
SCHOOL IS STARTING, YOU SEE
THEM EVERYWHERE. EVEN
WORSE THAN CHANCE HALL
ENCOUNTERS? YOU’RE STILL
CO-CHAIRS OF STEM CLUB,
SO YOU’LL BE WORKING
CLOSELY TOGETHER ALL YEAR.
MAJOR UGH.
DEAL WITH IT: Whether you
ended things on good terms or
bad, seeing your ex all the time
is not ideal. And while there’s
no rule saying you have to stay
You had an amazing summer, for the most part:
Epic camping trips with your besties! A new
personal record in the mile! That one magical
week when you and your brother got along!
But for all of the good, there might have been
some not-so-great moments...especially in the
relationship realm. You know: super awkward
first dates, ugly breakups and the realization
that everyone in your crew is coupled up...
except you. Now that school’s starting (and you
can’t just hide in a pool cabana), it’s time to
face those #thatfeelingwhen sitches.
