art student who is found dead at the bottom of a
well in an ancient hilltop château. She had been
researching the archives of a French art historian
and war hero, a thread which leads Bruno from
1945 Berlin to France’s colonial war in Algeria.

Prolific French director Agnès Varda has put

herself in the frame for her new film, which is all

the more poignant following her passing away in

March this year. The film looks back across her

60-year career, exploring her motivations and

processes. It is made in her unique style with

mixtures of reality and representation, moving

and still images, and intersperses old clips and

reconstructions alongside Agnès talking direct to

camera. Having captured so many others in her

films it is fitting that she is her own final subject.
