Those of you paying attention will
recall that Montreal-based studio
Locomotive starred in net 323’s Gallery
roundup. Having wowed then with its
own portfolio site, it has quite literally
reverted to type in another bid for glory.
This commercial collaboration with
font makers Pangram Pangram Foundry
was conceived to launch its variable
typeface, Editorial New. Both retro and
elegantly serif in styling, the font aims
to deliver contemporary classicism to
long-form digital copy. So it makes
sense that this showcase experience
leans on traditional print media,
rendering a rich preview of Editorial
New onto a virtual newspaper. Loading
initially as a distant thumbnail, this
element then spins 360-degrees upon
scroll to gradually zoom full-width.
It’s beautifully implemented and
leverages Locomotive’s own GitHub-
published library for adding parallax
effects. Used by the team’s own coders,
alongside ModularJS, Locomotive Scroll
is freely available and worth checking
out. The possibilities are examined here,
imaginatively introducing the featured
font with rollover character maps and
shuffling weight cards. Keep an eye out
too for some nostalgic advertisement
pages that can be randomised on the
fly like editorial snippets across a print
room light box.
