What’s the best piece of advice
you’d give to anyone who wants
to make a career as an expedition
photographer like you?
I would say don’t dream it, do it. It’s just
a matter of putting your heart into it and
IRUWKDW\RXQHHGWRÀQGDVWRU\WKDW
you’re passionate about and that you have
access to. It does not mean you have to go
into the jungle in Madagascar where you
have never been, but in your own
environment. Find an area that intrigues
you where you want to spend time and
VHDUFKIRUDVWRU\WKHUHXQWLO\RXÀQG
something good. Photograph it and stick
with it as I did for many, many years until
I was good enough to present the images.
Also, show your work to as many pros
as you can to get advice. Look at the work
of other photographers and write to them.
We always remember how it was when
we were looking for advice. I’m grateful
for the people that helped me, so don’t be
afraid to ask. If you get ‘no’ for an answer,
you can turn around and ask the next
person! I believe that if people see that
you have something to say with your
pictures they will help you.

Expedition and volcano photographerUlla Lohmann is an internationally renowned
photojournalist, adventurer and documentary
filmmaker. She graduated with a BSc degree
in natural resource management and
photojournalism from James Cook University
in Australia. Ulla specializes in photographing
active volcanoes and documenting the
changing world of indigenous tribes. She has
travelled extensively in the South Pacific,
particularly Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.Her work has been featured in National
Geographic, GEO, Stern View, New York Times,
the BBC and many other international media
platforms. Ulla is a brand ambassador for
Canon, Eizo, Manfrotto and F-Stop. She was
appointed a fellow of the Explorer’s Club of
New York in recognition of her achievements
and conducts workshops, lectures and
presentations worldwide.
