Director Alfonso Cuarón has a string of award-winning
ilms to his name, from Mexican road movie Y Tu Mamá
También to Gravity. His protégé, Chaitanya Tamhane,
has just one feature ilm on his résumé, Court. Cuarón
was starting work on his latest ilm, Roma, when they
met. ‘I hadn’t shared the script with anyone,’ he says.
‘But I let Chaitanya read it, and he became a sounding-
board.’ Tamhane describes this as ‘an incredible act of
trust, that someone in Alfonso’s position was prepared
to share something so important with me. For me,
ilm making is all about narrative, but Alfonso thinks like
an artist; he treats every shot like a canvas, arranging
every tiny detail.’ The two men have obviously become
irm friends, with Tamhane’s charm and magic tricks
