 STAGE FIVE
When the paint was dry I used a masking
l uid rubber to remove the masking l uid by
rubbing gently. I make my own rubber from
what is left over in the bottles as it solidii es,
but you can also buy them

 STAGE THREE
This layer of i r trees was painted with cool
green mixes of quinacridone gold and
phthalo turquoise, and burnt sienna and
phthalo turquoise, applied with the same
palette knife and water sprayer technique.
When the bottoms of the i r trees were dry,
I established the forest l oor by painting a
broad wash of slightly greyed burnt sienna
with the 2in l at brush across the foreground,
wet-in-wet. While still wet, I added some
texture with a few dabs of scrunched cling
i lm and some l icks of a slightly stronger mix
with the tip of the palette knife

‘Try printing marks with,

for example, scrunched tissue,

cling i lm, the vein sides

of leaves or from anything

textured’

p STAGE FOUR
I mixed a dark, greyish brown and painted
in the trunk of the foreground i r tree a third
from the left, wetting the trunk i rst and
blotting out a tiny bit with a small piece of
kitchen towel before it dried, so that it didn’t
look too even. Then with a dark, greyish
purple mixture I painted the silver birch
trunks, making sure to go straight over the
masking l uid and i lling in all the gaps
