THE IDEAThis sweet alfresco centerpiece brings
petal-packed clematis blossoms to eye level. Abandoned
on the junk heap, the egg basket provides structure for
the twining perennial vine. Paired with a shallow
terra-cotta planter—the more patina, the better—the
combo is an ever-changing garden focal point.
TIP Clematis is often sold climbing up a petite trellis.
Before planting in a terra-cotta container, carefully
remove the vine from the trellis, cutting away the
structure and unfurling the tendrils.
BLOOMS’Blue Light’ clematis blooms in late spring
and summer; its clean, green foliage is an asset
throughout the growing season. For a pop of chartreuse,
cover the soil with a thin layer of reindeer moss, available
at crafts supply stores.
