‘Bish’ Robson is hoping to encourage girls to get

The year the world’s first traffic ticket

was issued. Walter Arnold was

travelling at a shocking four times

the speed limit! But, before you

think he was a rally driver, the

book had caught up to him

after chasing him using a

bicycle... He was racing along

at around 12km/h. Back in

the day though, cars had to

travel at 3km/h with a man waving a red flag in

front of it. That law was abolished soon after,

but Arnold still had to pay his fine of a shilling

plus costs.

SUPER SKA

The SKA (Square Kilometre Array) telescope

is well on its way to being ready. An

international team, headed up by the

University of Cambridge (UK), has completed

the engineering design work, which involved

designing the computing hardware, software

and algorithms it needs to process data into

images. Once it’s completed, we will be able

to monitor the sky in a way no one has ever

been able to before. How exciting that one of

the supercomputers for this telescope will be

housed right here in Cape Town (the second

one is in Perth, Australia).
