Purple Swamphen
Binomial Name: Porphyrio porphyrio
The Purple Swamphen is an uncommon resident bird in Bangladesh. It roams in theextensive marshs, lakes, marshlands and grasslands of Chittagong, Dhaka, Sylhet, and
Khulna. The diurnal birds roam in medium-to-large groups. They are very grumpy and oftenfight on their own. They are pretty active on cloudy days, apart from dawn and dusk. They
feed on the wet ground or on floating plants. The diet includes seeds, grains, grassroots,small aquatic plants, insects, and snails. During the breeding season from April to
September, they lay their eggs in dry tubes on the water piled on top of the grass.
