Greater Painted-snipe
Binomial Name: Rostratula benghalensis
An intermittent, shy, beautiful bird with wide eyes. The Greater Painted-snipe is a rareresident bird of Bangladesh. It is not easy to see them as they are hidden. Commonly seen
alone, in pairs, or in small groups in wetlands, damp grasslands, or floodplain paddy fieldsin the divisions of Chittagong, Dhaka, Khulna, and Sylhet. They walk in shallow water and
eat with their beaks on the ground. The diet includes insects, snails, shrimp, earthworms,seeds, and grains. They are more active at dawn and dusk. Their breeding season is from
July to September. At this time, they make a nest by spreading grass in a bunch of grass
and laying eggs.
