Little Heron, Striated Heron, Mangrove Heron
Binomial Name: Butorides striatus
The Little Heron is the smallest member of the heron family in Bangladesh and is the mostcommon resident aquatic bird in Bangladesh. More or less noticed everywhere in the
country. From Sundarban to Rangamati, they are seen. Generally solitary in Bangladesh'smangrove forests, estuaries, wetlands, rivers, canals, and reservoirs. It waits in hiding just
above the water and catches and eats prey with its pointed beaks when the opportunityarises. Food includes small fish, shrimp, frogs, aquatic insects, etc. During the breeding
season from March to July, they lay their eggs in small nests made of twigs in small trees
or bushes on the banks of rivers and ponds.
