Transparent edges
The Straighten tool measures the angle
of the tilted horizon and rotates the shot to
counteract it. By doing this, Affinity Photo then
needs to add transparent borders at the edges
to preserve the image’s rectangular shape.

Crop the shot
Set the overlay to Thirds Grid. Drag the
corner handles to crop out most of the bins and
the lower transparent edges. Place intersecting
grid lines on a subject you want to focus on for
a better composition (see Jargon Buster).

JARGON BUSTER

The Rule of Thirds overlay
creates a grid of three
columns and three rows.
The eye is naturally drawn
to where these grid lines
intersect (for example, the
house and cyclist in our
original image).

QUICK LOOK Make your photo a masterpiece!

TILTED HORIZON
Because of unwanted
camera tilt, the horizon is
displayed at an angle and
the castle’s walls don’t
appear vertical.

PRESERVE EDGES
Rotating a shot creates
transparent edges.
Instead of cropping, use
the Inpainting Brush to fill
these edges with content.

REPAIR JOB
The Inpainting Brush can
also automatically fill our
castle’s holes with nearby
bricks. We can use it to
hide the cyclist, too.

STRAIGHTEN UP
The Straighten tool
measures the angle of tilt
in the image and rotates
the shot to counteract it
(as shown above).

INPAINTING
BRUSH TOOL
This intelligent tool can
remove unwanted objects
or people by automatically
sampling adjacent pixels.
